Shyam Lal College (SLC), a co-educational constituent college of the University of Delhi, was established in 1964 by the great visionary and entrepreneur Padmashri (late) Shri Shyam Lal Gupta, the then Chairman of Shyam Lal charitable trust. The foundation stone of the College was laid down by Dr. Zakir Hussain, the then Hon'ble Vice President of India and Chancellor of the University of Delhi. The aim of the College, at the time of inception, was to make quality education accessible to the students, especially girls, from the economically and educationally disadvantaged community of East Delhi. Since its establishment, SLC has come a long way and has become a centre of academic excellence in University of Delhi. Spread over on a sprawling campus of 29,501 square meters and a built up area of 7,505,40 square meters, SLC offers 09 Undergraduate courses in various streams of Science, Commerce and Humanities and 01 Postgraduate course (in Hindi).
The academic results of the students of the College have effectively resulted in steady progress over the years with a large number of students securing first division in different subjects.
B) International Exchange Programmes- The International Exchange Programme is a unique concept of our College which helps in career development of the students. It provides the students with an opportunity to engage and learn from cross cultural environment with academicians and their fellow students from different universities and countries. Infact, we are in the midst of our first International Exchange Programme with Finland where the Center for International Mobility (CIMO), Finland sponsored 4 of our students to Finland in September 2017 for a month. The College has successfully organized this academic exchange programme between SLC and three oldest Universities from Finland - Turku School of Economics/ Pori Unit (University of Turku), South Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK), Turku University of Applied Sciences (as Coordinator), Finland based on the project" Responsible Business Professional For Finland and India Trade" (1st September 2016 – 31st August 2018) funded by The Center for International Mobility (CIMO), Finland.
C) Faculty - Our faculty is immensely talented, knowledgeable and dedicated. The faculty comprises several experts in their respective fields, distinguished authors, researchers and scholars, with reputed international and national publications. Going an extra mile, the faculty promotes blended learning in which they make maximum utilization of digital, visual and online aids to lecture in the class. Importantly, our faculty members don't limit their interaction with the students to the classrooms. They act as mentors and are always available for any kind of help. Besides this, the faculty members provide soft skills training to the students during organization of various events of the College leading to an overall development.
The College has established Six important Centres that offer unique platform and opportunity to the students to have a wholesome learning experience. These Centres are: Centre for Holistic Development (CHD), Centre for Industry Interaction and Skill Development (CIISD), Eco Club, Women Development Cell (WDC), Ambedkar Study Circle (ASC) and Gandhi Study Circle (GSC). Centre for Industry Interaction and Skill Development (CIISD) consists of three Cells – Placement Cell, Entrepreneurship Cell and Skill Development Cell for enhancing the skills and employability of the students and facilitates the visit of leading companies like HSBC, Mazars India, ICICI Prudential in the campus for placements, internships and continuous engagements. The Placement Cell is able to place approximately 20-25 per cent of students every year. These Centres have taken up cross-cutting issues related to modern lifestyle, gender, caste identity in India, professional challenges, social anomalies etc. National Cadet Corps (NCC) and National Service Scheme (NSS) are very active units of the College, which serve the purpose of developing the youth as socially aware and sensitive citizens. Many activities undertaken under these units give opportunity to the cadets to contribute to the welfare of the society and in turn work for the social cause.
With the primary objective of providing quality education to all, SLC makes special efforts to enable and facilitate learning among the students belonging to the underprivileged sections. The College ensures that special classes – Remedial as well as Spoken English are held on continuous basis for the students who have difficulty in coping with the demands of the curriculum.
Meritorious Students are provided scholarships by the College and outside agencies. Fee concession and Book Aid facility is given to the needy students.
Skill Development Cell (SDC) of the College keeps on introducing various innovative add-on courses from time to time. We have already launched two batches of a Certificate Course on Online Trading in collaboration with Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).Certificate Courses in Spanish, French and German languages are likely to be introduced very soon.
SLC is the foremost college in East Delhi Campus of the University of Delhi with outstanding Sports facilities for games like Hockey, Netball, Volleyball, Wrestling, Judo and Kabbadi in which our players are continuously winning laurels for the institution. The College aims at promotion and improvement of sports and games in trans-Yamuna region of Delhi by providing opportunities and best coaching facilities to the young and talented players of the society. Presently students can participate in 09 different games/sport for which experts and coaches are also hired from outside. SLC Inter-Varsity Invitational Hockey tournament has already become an integral part of the University calendar.
The academic foundation of an educational institution is reinforced with extra-curricular activities. SLC conducts a myriad of activities through its Arts and Cultural societies. The Annual Cultural festival 'Anugoonj' gives a platform to the students to showcase their talents in dance, music, theatre, fine arts and more in a grand show. Our Dramatics Society, "Jharokha" and Street Play Society, "Aakrosh" have been winning accolades in the National and University level competitions for their plays. The other major societies of the College Quibble- the Quiz Society, Sheershasth- the Debating Society, Qasida- The Poetry Society, The Photography Society, Swargam- the Music Society, Aarodhya- the Dance Society, Insignia- the College Rock Band are also performing exceptionally well. Another interesting annual initiative taken in tandem with the Govt's 'Skill India' programme is the organization of an inter-college 'University Chef Competition'. This unique effort is a step to enhance the creativity and application of precise thought process among the students.
A) Library- SLC has a rich and well stocked ICT enabled library. It has more than 76000 books and subscribed journals on diverse subjects. The library also has OPAC facility to make the task of locating books easier for the students and the faculty.We also have a fully air conditioned Knowledge Resource Centre where students and teachers can acquire abundant knowledge through e-resources by accessing world's best databases, E-Journals, E-books and Reports in an easy and expeditious manner. Also, we have a state-of-the-art Reading Room with a seating capacity of 75 persons.
B) Other Facilities- The College is a Wi-Fi zone with internet access to every student and the Staff. The College has a Porta Block consisting of well-ventilated classrooms and a 100 seater state-of-the art Seminar room equipped with the latest ICT facility. Most of the rooms in the main building are equipped with LCD projector and other facilities. There are 07 well-equipped undergraduate labs in the College – Physics Lab, Chemistry Lab, Biology Lab, Electronics Lab and three Computer Labs. The Computer Labs of the College offer the very best in terms of hardware and software to the students and the faculty. Staff room, Library, Office and Canteen have been recently renovated into fine air-conditioned spaces. The entire campus is under CCTV surveillance. An Amphitheatre is available for practice of extra-curricular activities.
C) Facilities for PwD Students-
The College makes every effort to provide barrier free mobility to all PwD students everywhere in the campus. Ramps and signage on passages have been provided at maximum possible places. Where 100% barrier free mobility cannot be assured, classes for PWD students are conducted on ground floor to cause minimum inconvenience to them. From this academic year, two Lifts are also becoming functional. Recently, the College has set up a well-equipped Facilitation Centre for PwD students with dedicated computer systems with all the relevant softwares installed so as to facilitate the smooth imparting of education to PwD students. At the start of each session, the College organizes a meeting with the PWD students wherein the students are assured of all the required support from the College in enabling them to carry on all activities in and outside the class just like other students. In such meetings some of the faculty, especially those who are themselves differently abled, talk to the students to reassure them in all respects. During the session workshops are conducted with them to provide them information about the existing facilities, and enabling them to use these effectively.
Last but not the least, a lot of innovations takes place on regular basis in the College. Virtual Lectures, Case Studies, Simulation Exercises, Live Projects of Art & Sculpture in the Classrooms, Use of Cinema, Corporate Internships, Gender Sensitisation and Women Empowerment Programmes, Employee Involvement/Participative Management, Institutional Social Responsibility Activities, Safety Audits, Destressing Activities for Faculty, Support Staff and Students, Soft Skills Training for the Students.
Understanding the need for Grievance Redressal, the College has an active Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) and a Grievance Redressal Committee to look after specific complaints and grievances of particularly girls, under-privileged students.
